BOO!
Did I spook you?
Thanks for "haunting" over here!
I just love Halloween, don't you?
As teachers, we can engage our students during any
of the holiday seasons, but
I find that students are most engaged around Halloween time ....
even reluctant learners are engaged!
Which makes my teacher heart so happy!

Here's my TRICK to you ...

Every year, I buy a pumpkin for my classroom.
I leave the pumpkin at the corner of my desk for about a week.
During that time frame, students are so inquisitive
and they ask all kinds of questions.
They want to know as to what they will be doing with the pumpkin.
They are excited!
They are curious!

They want to know as to when they can get started
with their pumpkin lesson.
They are engaged!
They are hooked!

The following week, we gather on the carpet with our pumpkin and
review the concept of nouns and verbs.
Then, I ask them to describe our very own pumpkin.
At first, students are slow to come up with descriptive words,
but as soon as I start writing their words
ON THE PUMPKIN,
with a black Sharpie,
you hear the excitement in their voices.
Then, everyone wants to quickly get in on the action.
They cannot wait to have THEIR word written on the pumpkin.

Once we finish brainstorming our descriptive words,
I introduce the concept of ADJECTIVES.
I let my students know that all those words
that we have just written on our pumpkin
are known as adjectives.
Students then work in pairs
in order to complete their pumpkin sheet.

Following this activity,
I then ask students to color and add details to their monster.
They can add polka dots, stripes, fur, mustaches, etc. to their monsters.
I let them get creative!
Once they are completely satisfied with their monsters,
they are then asked to describe their monster by
providing as many adjectives as they can possibly think of.

We also do a quick Show and Share of our monsters!

Here is what our finished product looks like!
This monster adjective activity is my TREAT to you.
I hope your students will enjoy it as much as my students have.
